Artist Statement
My art uses simplicity of form, mixed-media experimental processes, and color experienced as light to create a sense of wonder and awe about the human condition and the mysterious, ephemeral nature of being. Whereas much of my work is a poetic response to the physical world and tangible life experiences, some of it stems from a desire to investigate abstract conceptual ideas.
Nature, with its lavish hues and rich textures, often inspires my work. I frequently combine painted sections of atmospheric color with gilded sections of gold leaf. The painted areas have a fleeting quality, suggesting that emergence and dissolution are immanent. The gilded areas also address our relationship with time. The rhythm set up by circular mark making on individual leaves of gold correspond to the gentle tempo in an adagio movement in music, evoking a sense of the eternal and sacred in all that exists.
In addition to producing paintings and constructions, I also create geometric, conceptual artworks designed to explore the intriguing questions of existence, meaning, and the sublime. Art making is a journey into the unknown. I never know where it will take me. If I am not surprised by the result, I have not pushed far enough.
